Library Book Drive Flyer

I didn’t have a lot of time to pick out my redesign project this morning, and I know it’s a bit repetitive doing another NSLM post but this book drive flyer has been on my mind for days. They've been using the same image for…. ages? Okay, maybe not ages but I think it's been around five years now, if not more.

I understand the value of consistency, especially for an institution with a rich history. You want that instant recognition. But, honestly? This flyer just felt...a little stagnant. It lacks the richness and sense of discovery you'd expect from a museum dedicated to sporting history and literature. It felt more like a faded photograph than a tempting invitation to engage with the past.

BEFORE

Considering the museum's mission to preserve and share these incredible stories and artifacts, I thought, 'We can definitely bring more life to this!' I wanted to create something that evoked the feeling of stepping into a well-loved library or a historic sporting event. Something that captured the allure of uncovering a lost book or rediscovering a forgotten chapter of history.

Essentially, I wanted to move away from a static, almost archival feel and inject a sense of dynamic storytelling. So, I dug into some historical design references and got to work. Here’s what I came up with!

AFTER

For this redesign, I stuck to the color palette I generated from the Sporting Library and Museum's logo using Adobe Color, ensuring brand consistency. I also continued the use of their established and more sophisticated font. The original flyer lacked essential information, so I included dates and deadlines for the book drive. I believe this detail is crucial for potential donors. To complement the design, I selected images of books that evoke a sense of history and warmth. While I would have preferred to use original photography showcasing the library's collection, these images serve as a suitable substitute. Additionally, I omitted the word 'old' and used 'used' books to create a more positive and inviting message.

I came in under my 1 hour time limit with this redesign at 45 minutes. Below, you'll find both redesigned NSLM flyers side-by-side, illustrating how consistent branding enhances a sophisticated and professional aesthetic.
